What a poor night for the home team, with an opening twelve minute blitz from Cornard which reaped two goals, which was a forward note to a defeat.

Forcing repeat corners in the opening minutes Cornard went ahead after only 7 minutes, a scramble in the Melford goalmouth from a corner, saw the ball ping pongĀ  around the goal line, with LOUIE ARNOLD claiming the final touch.

The lead increased on 11 minutes when after some shabby defending saw LUKE SPURLING headed home from a corner.

It was clear the visitors were wanting to claim the three points, showing great spirit and determination throughout the game.

The standard of football in general was not great with the ball being hoofed up and down the pitch by both teams.

Melford lost new signing Charlie Iglesias on his first start with a knee ligament problem halfway through the 45 minutes, another addition to the long injury list for The Villagers.

After 32 minutes Melford got a goal back a good release ball from Ban Humphreys put in the speedy teenager JOSH FENTON-JONES behind the Cornard back line and he neatly chipped the advancing Ryan Lees in the Cornard goal. A little bit of hope forĀ  Melford.

Sometimes the officials’ decisions can impact on the outcome of the game, on 51 minutes the referee deemed a Melford defender had handled a point blank shot and awarded a penalty and LOUIE ARNOLD converted from the spot.

Ironically the same situation was replicated in the Cornard box minutes later but the referee deemed it was not a penalty!

An under par performance from Melford but for Cornard a deserved victory. CHENOBERET
