Long Melford returned to league action desperately seeking some points after a run of defeats.

And it was to be another tough game as Mildenhall Town came to Stoneylands with 11 points from their opening six matches.

The home side were forced into a couple of changes from Saturday’s starting line-up. Dan Smith and Jack Brame were unavailable due to injury/illness. Josh Collins returned from suspension with Ben Humphreys brought in to lead the line.

Mildenhall started well and Melford weathered an early storm to then take the lead, Ross Waugh heavily involved from right back and his cross was knocked back across goal and headed home by WILL WINGFIELD.

On 32 minutes the lead was doubled, a bright attack looked to have been thwarted when Humphreys’ shot struck JACOB BROWN a few yards out but the skipper showed exceptional skill to control and rifle home at the second attempt.

2-0 at the half-time whistle and Mildenhall came out and went for it in the second half. However, some excellent defending from the home side limited them to just one shot on goal. In the 70th minute a shot from substitute KUSHINGA BENYU nestled into the bottom corner.

Melford had chances to put the game beyond doubt. Hassan Ally, Brown, Harry Whiting-Noakes and Frederico Dende all went close but couldn’t add to the tally.

Conceding late goals has cost Melford several points this season but tonight they showed excellent game management to see it out until the final whistle and secure three points.
